Submerged Plants are essential for a healthy water garden. They serve a number of important purposes, most importantly: (A) Oxygenation of Pond Water and (B) Filtration / Cleansing or “Scrubbing” of Pond Water. Along with surface-covering plants like waterlilies, submerged plants help achieve a natural ecological balance of the pond water by absorbing excess nutrition from the water, thus starving out algae that cause green water and renewing the pond with oxygen during daylight hours. The result is clean, clear pond water without chemicals, filters, or fuss!
Additionally the varied foliage of these plants provides excellent spawning ground for your fish and it also gives the baby fish a place to hide once the eggs hatch.
As a general rule, submerged plants prefer 12-36 inches of water above their roots (unless otherwise noted.) They will thrive in a water garden, even under dense plantings of waterlilies and also make excellent live plants for aquariums. Oxygenating Plants are considered winter hardy providing the water in the bottom of the pond does not entirely freeze
