HARDY  BOG  PLANTS

FREE SHIPPING on Aquatic Plant Orders $50.00 or more!

Bog Plants are also called Marginal Plants. That’s because their natural habitats are the shallow water along the margins of a pond or stream. They also grow in bogs and swamp like conditions. There are upright growing types like bulrushes, cattails and horsetail and surface covering types that grow like miniature waterlilies or creep along the water surface.

As a general rule, the upright growing bog plants prefer 0-6 inches of water above their roots (unless otherwise noted) and the surface-covering bog plants need 4-18 inches of water above their roots.  Most bog plants will thrive in any exposure from full sun to shade or anything in between (unless otherwise noted.) All plants on this page are winter hardy down to USDA Zone 4 (unless otherwise noted.)

This is a beautiful but very unusual plant from South Africa. In climates where the pond water doesn’t freeze, Water Hawthorn grows and blooms from late summer through the winter and spring. In colder climates it goes dormant in the winter with the rest of the hardy plants and comes to life during the regular growing season.  The growth habit is much like a waterlily with floating strap-like leaves and v-shaped clusters of flowers which are heavily fragrant and reminiscent of vanilla.
